Notes:

Old Mill Cottage: 1922 assignment
Old Mill Cottage: 1922 assignment
  • Assignment dated 29th July 1922
  • Following the death of Mrs Betsy Collishaw the property is assigned to her widow, Mr William Collishaw.
    • Betsy Collishaw died in 1921 (recorded as age 64, born 1857 – transcription error for 1837/age 84)
    • Probate record; “Collishaw Betsy of Hickling Wharf Hickling Nottinghamshire (wife of William Collishaw) died 20th March 1921 Probate Nottingham 8th June to the said William Collishaw retired coal merchant and James Wright Collishaw farmer. Effects £2316.11s.3d.”
  • William Collishaw died 29th September 1929, Cropwell Bishop
    • Probate record; “Collishaw William of Owthorpe Cottage Cropwell Bishop Nottinghamshire died 21st September 1929 Probate Nottingham 14th November to Charles William Collishaw chemist and James Wright Collishaw farmer Effects £9,438.4s.3d.”
    • 1922 transactions indicate that William Collishaw moved to Owthorpe Cottage, Cropwell Bishop following Betsy’s death.
  • Also named is James Wright Collishaw (farmer of Hickling); co-executor of her Estate.
  • It would seem that the property had been rented since its purchase in 1885; the occupier in 1922 is Albert Barnett, before him it was occupied by Miss Mary White.
    • At this time William Collishaw is a retired coal merchant living in Owthorpe Cottage, Cropwell Bishop.
    • Sadly, one of her earlier tenants committed suicide at the property (then known as Virginia Cottage) in 1909; “August 1909: Mr Nelson Outhwaite aged 58 years was found hanging in an outhouse of his home Virginia Cottage. House end to road opposite Wharf House.” (H Wadkin; Scrapbook of Hickling)

Involved Individuals:

William and Betsy (Wharf) Collishaw:

    • William (Waterlane Farm) Collishaw and John (father of William (Wharf) Collishaw) were both born in Wysall; this, in turn, explains the later link between William & Betsy Collishaw and James Wright Collishaw (son at Waterlane Farm).

    • 1922 transactions indicate William Collishaw is resident at Owthorpe Cottage, Cropwell Bishop.
    • Charles William Collishaw was the son of John Collishaw (born in Hickling, 1847) – brother of William (Wharf) Collishaw. Both John and Charles were chemists in London (see 1930 Abstract of Title notes).
  • Chris Granger’s history records that Betsy Collishaw left a bequest to the Church in 1921 in her Will; it was used to install electricity to the building. Her husband, William Collishaw, also left a bequest to be used for general Church maintenance. The amounts bequeathed are unknown (further research needed).
  • For many years William and Betsy Collishaw gave 5cwt of coal to each widow and widower at Christmas. Following William’s retirement, they gave 5 shillings instead.

James Wright Collishaw:

  • Is the son of William and Elizabeth Collishaw of Waterlane Farm (see 1885 land tax notes):
    • He is listed in the Waterlane Farm household in 1871, age 7 (born in Hickling)
    • As an adult he farms The Elms (now Elm Farm) almost opposite to his birthplace at Waterlane Farm; his son, Percy continued to farm at Elm Farm.
    • James Wright Collishaw is the younger cousin of William (Wharf) Collishaw (their respective fathers were both born in Wysall; William Collishaw (farmer at Waterlane Farm) and John Collishaw (coal merchant)).
    • James Wright Collishaw is executor of the Wills of both William and Betsy (Wharf) Collishaw.

Miss Mary White:

  • This branch of the White family appear to have been resident as farmers in Hickling from sometime between 1858 when Mary White was born in East Leake and their first appearance in Hickling Census returns in 1861.
  • Census 1891 (Main Street, Hickling)
    • John White, age 56, 1835, farmer – born East Leake
    • Caroline White, age 67, 1824 – born Willoughby
    • Mary White, daughter, single, age 33, 1858 – born East Leake
    • William White, son, single, age 24, 1867 – born Hickling
  • In Q3 1896 (Melton District) Elizabeth White married Ernest Henry Shelton in Hickling
    • Wadkin archive W0052; photograph of the families ‘outside the home of the White family on Hickling Pastures. Mr & Mrs White and family moved here from East Leake in the early 1860s. The farm, the last house on the right hand side of the main road to Nottingham, stands a field away from the road. Mr & Mrs Ernest Shelton lived in Hickling at Elm House, the last house on the road to Nether Broughton.
    • Census 1901 (Hickling); Ernest (blacksmith) and Elizabeth Shelton with their two daughters, Caroline and Elizabeth. This record shows that Elizabeth was born in Hickling c.1869.
  • Census 1901 (Hickling Village)
    • John White, age 70, 1831, grazier – born East Leake
    • Caroline White, age 77, 1824 – born Willoughby
    • Mary White, daughter, single, age 43, 1858 – born East Leake
    • Frank P Brooks, boarder, single, age 25, 1876, wheelwright – born Norfolk
  • Census 1911 (Hickling Village):
    • John White, widower, age 78, 1833, farmer – born East Leake, Notts
    • Mary White, daughter, single, age 52, 1859, farmer’s daughter dairy work – born East Leake, Notts
    • Arthur Henry Robinson, boarder, single, age 30, 1881, wheelwright – born Tamworth, Staffs
  • As the Outhwaite family are known to be resident in this property in 1909, it is likely that Mary White moved in at some point following the death of her father in 1917.
    • “White John of Hickling Nottinghamshire grazier died 25th June 1917 Probate Nottingham 28th August to Mary White Spinster. Effects £185.18s”
    • Betsy Collishaw’s Will in 1918 records Miss Mary White as the current occupier of the cottage.

Albert Barnett:

  • This assignment document (July 1922) and the conveyance of The Wharf to JW Harriman (also in July 1922) places Albert Barnett at Old Mill Cottage/Virginia Cottage; however, the Wadkin Archives place him with his wife at Yew Tree House from the mid-1920s.
  • Wadkin Archive W1096; photograph of Leonard Hickling with his wife Ada (outside Rose Cottage) and Mrs Albert Barnett (of Yew Tree House)
  • Wadkin Archive W1211; photograph of Mr & Mrs Albert Barnett outside their home, Yew Tree House – labelled mid-1920s.
  • Otherwise, records are unclear for Albert Barnett in Hickling.
    • Possible birth and census records in Widmerpool indicating a birth date of 1886
    • No marriage record found (his wife’s name is needed for clarification).
    • Electoral Registers place Albert Barnett in Hickling between 1921 and 1925

Mr Nelson Outhwaite:

  • Wadkin Archive photograph W0428 shows Nelson Outhwaite at the Widmerpool Parade in 1908.
  • In 1909; “August 1909: Mr Nelson Outhwaite aged 58 years was found hanging in an outhouse of his home Virginia Cottage. House end to road opposite Wharf House.” (H Wadkin; Scrapbook of Hickling)
  • More information can be found on the Outhwaite family page.
