In the Churchyard:

Sisters Ann (Annie) & Ruth Allen – Drake:

  • Ann bap. 29th June 1856, died 16th May 1908 aged 52yrs.
  • She is an unmarried servant in the Marshall household in the 1871 census
  • Ann married Thomas Drake 29th Feb 1876 in Hickling.
  • Following Ann’s death in 1908, her widowed husband married Ann’s sister (Ruth Allen) in 1911. Thomas died in October 1913 and was buried with his first wife in Hickling Churchyard.
  • Their headstone is on the north side and next to the church path; it reads:
    • “In loving memory of Annie, the beloved wife of Thomas Drake, who fell asleep May 15th 1908 aged 52 years “Still in our hearts she lives”. Also of Thomas Drake her beloved husband who fell asleep Oct 27th 1923 aged 57 years. Reunited.”
  • Ruth remained a widow until her death in 1941; she is listed in Nottingham (as, ‘incapacitated’) in the 1939 Register and her death is recorded in Basford District.

John and Sarah Allen:

“In loving memory of John the dearly loved husband of Sarah Allen Dickman who passed away March 26th 1934 aged 62 years ‘Simply to the cross I cling’. Also his beloved wife Sarah Allen who passed away Feb 1st 1950 aged 82 years. Their memory is as dear to-day as on the day they passed away.”

    • Emma appears in her parents’ household in Hickling in 1851 & 1861 – in 1861 she is the second eldest of 6 children (note surname sometimes transcribed as Penson).
    • Emma Allen was buried in Hickling, 7th November 1883, age 34. There are no notes against the registry entry and there are no infant burials at the same time; however, there are inconsistencies in the baptismal records for her children which might indicate a death in childbirth (more work needed).
    • Census 1891 (Hickling): William Allen is living in UB – widower – male – 43 – 1848 – ag lab – born Hickling. There are 2 sons in the household; Arthur age 12 and John W age 9.
    • Census 1901: William Allen (widower, born Hickling 1849) is living alone in Upper Broughton – he is a labourer on the roads.
    • Census 1911: William is living in a household in Upper Broughton with his wife (of 7 years), Mary; this is likely to be Mary (Rippon/Brooks) Allen (born Hickling 1856).
