Old Mill Cottage: 1885 land tax

The Transactions:

  • By 1885 ownership of the property has passed to Betsy Collishaw; wife of William (Wharf) Collishaw (the younger) – see 1885 conveyance.
  • Land Tax of 4d is paid by Betsy Collishaw (wife of William (Wharf) Collishaw, the younger) on the land previously occupied by Mary Ann Wiles; Betsy Collishaw is “now owner in fee simple”
    • In earlier property records in 1861, a William Collishaw is described as a neighbour (to the south) of Mary Ann Wiles but this was not William (Wharf) Collishaw.
    • It is William Collishaw (baptised Hickling, 3rd July 1825 – parents Edward & Elizabeth Collishaw – father’s occupation, gardener & later butcher) and married to Elizabeth (Whittle) Collishaw.
  • The property is described as; “recently occupied by Mary Ann Wiles and now unoccupied”
  • In 1885 it is, “bounded on the north and west by property of George Henry Collishaw, on the south by property of John Magson and on the East by the town street of Hickling aforesaid …”
    • In 1861 the property to the south was occupied by William and Elizabeth (Whittle) Collishaw; they don’t appear to be closely related to William and Betsy (Wharf) Collishaw.
    • In 1861 the property to the north and west was occupied by William Marson (likely to be a descendent of Job and Eliza Marson – see 1838 mortgage)
    • In 1885 John Magson is now neighbour to the south
    • In 1885; George Henry Collishaw is now neighbour to the north and west:
      • Baptised Hickling 23rd April 1848 – parents John and Ann Collishaw:
      • He is nephew to William and Elizabeth (Whittle) Collishaw – previously neighbours to the south(he is the son of William’s brother, John).
      • Like his father (John) and grandfather (Edward), he is a butcher.
      • Note; census 1881:

        • Sarah A Felstead; servant, age 15, 1866 – born Hoby, Leics

Collishaw family connections and notes.

There are two distinct Collishaw family groups involved in this property:

(1) William and John Collishaw (brothers born in Wysall):

  • William and Elizabeth (Wright) Collishaw of Waterlane Farm (farmer)
    • William Collishaw baptised 24th December 1815 in Wysall – parents William (farmer) and Anne Collishaw.
    • Their son, Henry Wright Collishaw farmed The Elms (now Elm Farm) in Hickling; he would later act as executor of William & Betsy (Wharf) Collishaw’s respective Wills.
    • Henry Wright Collishaw married Edith Mary Woolley; their son Percy continued to farm at The Elms/Elm Farm.
  • John and Sarah (Gill) Collishaw (coal merchant)

(2) Edward and Elizabeth (Hopkinson) Collishaw of Hickling (street location unknown) – occupation butcher:

  • (son) William and Elizabeth (Whittle) Collishaw (see, below)
  • William and his elder brother Robert pursue the trade of joinery whilst his father (Edward), brother (John) and nephew (George Henry) are all in the butcher’s trade.
  • Also note; (son of Edward/brother of William) John and Ann (Faulks) Collishaw and their son; George Henry Collishaw – see, below.

Five different William Collishaws in the mid-1800s:

There appear to be at least five different William Collishaws in Hickling at this time. Records sometimes include hints to differentiate; William Collishaw ‘the older’, ‘the younger’, senior or junior and also by location, of Waterlane Farm, of The Wharf, of The Elms (now Elm Farm).

  • By the 1860s (see, below) there are two couples named William and Elizabeth Collishaw;
    1. William and Elizabeth (Whittle) Collishaw cited as neighbours to the south of Old Mill Cottage in 1861; the family moved away from Hickling in the 1870s and they are next recorded in Aston, Warks in the 1891 census (see, below).
      • Known children of William and Elizabeth (Whittle) Collishaw:
        • Frederick Collishaw born 3Q 1851 – mother’s maiden name Whittle (died as an infant)
        • Thomas Edward Collishaw born Q1 1858 – mother’s maiden name, Whittle
        • William Frederick Collishaw born Q4 1860 – mother’s maiden name Whittle
        • (see further detail, below)
    2. William Collishaw born Hickling c.1786, died in Hickling in 1858
      • Further clarification needed
      • Son of John Collishaw born 1766 and likely to be the brother of Edward Collishaw (butcher) meaning that he is likely to be the uncle of William Collishaw, born 1850 – (1) above
      • Census 1841:
        • William Collishaw age 55, 1786, cottager
        • John Collishaw age 75, 1766

    3. William and Elizabeth (Wright) Collishaw resident at Waterlane Farm; this William is about 10 years older than (1), whilst the two Elizabeths are of a similar age.
      • Marriage record; William Collishaw to Elizabeth Wright Q1 1856 Melton Mowbray; 16th January 1856 in Upper Broughton.
      • from the birth records of their children they seem to be living in Hickling from at least 1857/8 but they don’t appear in the 1861 census. However, birth records do identify the maiden name of the respective mothers in the different households.
      • Known children of William and Elizabeth (Wright) Collishaw:
        • Thomas William Collishaw born Q4 1857 and baptised 13th December 1857 (Hickling) – parents William and Elizabeth (maiden name Wright)
        • Mary Anne Collishaw born Q2 1859 and baptised 19th June 1859 (Hickling) – parents William and Elizabeth (maiden name Wright)
        • Sarah Elizabeth Collishaw born Q3 1860 and baptised 28th July 1860 (Hickling) – parents William and Elizabeth (maiden name Wright)
        • James Wright Collishaw born Q3 1863 and baptised 19th Sept 1863 (Hickling) – parents William and Elizabeth (maiden name Wright)
          • Census 1871, 1881 & 1891; in his parents’ household – farmer’s son
          • Married Edith Mary Woolley in Hickling; 21st November 1892
          • James Wright Collishaw farmed at the Elms (now Elm Farm) almost opposite to his father’s household at Waterlane Farm. His son continued at Elm Farm after him.
          • Census 1901 & 1911 (Hickling); with his wife (Edith) and two children (Percy age 7/17 and Dora age 4/14) in his own household – grazier
          • James Wright Collishaw lived all his life in Hickling; he died, age 66, 11th January 1930.
          • Probate record: Collishaw James Wright of the Elms Hickling Nottinghamshire died 11th January 1930 Probate Nottingham 21st February to Edith Mary Collishaw widow and Percy Collishaw farmer. Effects £5,696.5s.9d.
          • (The Elms is now known as Elm Farm and is situated roughly opposite James Wright Collishaw’s birthplace at Waterlane Farm)
      • Census 1871 – this family is also listed in 1881 and 1891:
        • William Collishaw; age 55, farmer 160 acres – born Wysall
        • Elizabeth Collishaw; age 48, born Cambs (maiden name Wright)
          • Possible death record; Elizabeth Collishaw (Bingham District) born 1823, died age 69 Q2 1892; burial in Hickling 23rd March 1892.
        • Thomas Wm Collishaw; age 13, scholar – born Hickling
        • Sarah Elizabeth Collishaw; age 10, scholar – born Hickling

        • Hannah [Etcher]; age 19, housemaid – born Cropwell, Notts
        • Joseph Eaton; age 16, farm servant – born Broughton, Notts
    4. William and Betsy (Wharf) Collishaw; this William was baptised in May 1849 and appears to be the nephew of William (Waterlane Farm) Collishaw.
      • See further detail, below
      • Known children of John and Sarah (Gill) Collishaw (William’s parents):
        • John Edward Collishaw born Q4 1841, baptised 7th January 1842 (Hickling) – parents John and Anne Collishaw (no mother’s maiden name listed – this may be an error, or John may have married twice; to be confirmed).
        • Anne Collishaw baptised 14th May 1844 (Hickling) – parents John and Sarah (Gill) Collishaw
        • John Collishaw baptised 23rd February 1847 (Hickling) – parents John and Sarah Collishaw
        • William Collishaw baptised 29th May 1849 (Hickling) – parents John and Sarah (Gill) Collishaw
        • Mary Collishaw born 3Q 1851 baptised 7th September 1851 (Hickling) – parents John and Sarah (Gill) Collishaw
  • There are several possibilities when untangling the connections:
    • It is likely that, to avoid confusion; William (Waterlane Farm) became known as the elder and William (Wharf) was known as the younger.
    • Whether William Collishaw (1) was ever referred to with a label is unknown.
    • ‘Betsy’ seems always to have referred to Betsy (Wharf) Collishaw; there is no sign that either of the other two Elizabeths were known as Betsy to distinguish them one-from-the-other.

Involved Individuals:

Mary Ann Wiles was still alive in 1885; she would die 3 years later in 1888. She was unmarried and without children of her own although there were surviving members of the wider Wiles family in Hickling at this time.

  • Census 1881; she still appears to be recorded here as a sole occupant (unmarried, age 55). Her record is immediately followed by the household of John Magson (tailor) which is likely to place her still at ‘Old Mill Cottage’.
  • No probate records have been found for the Estate of Mary Ann Wiles.
  • Mary Ann Wiles – see notes 1861 transfer of mortgage
  • She sells the property to Betsy Collishaw in 1885 – see 1885 conveyance document.

William and Elizabeth (Whittle) Collishaw: Resident as neighbours to the south of Old Mill Cottage in 1861.

  • This family appears to be unrelated to the Waterlane Farm and the Wharf Collishaws.
  • William Collishaw baptised Hickling, 3rd July 1825 – parents Edward & Elizabeth Collishaw (father’s occupation; gardener – later he is recorded as a butcher).
    • Edward Collishaw Birth record; 7th January 1787 (Hickling) – parents John & Elizabeth Collishaw
    • Edward Collishaw married Elizabeth Hopkinson (‘of this parish’) in Hickling 19th December 1808
    • Census 1841 (see below); occupation – butcher
    • Census 1851 (Hickling); butcher (his two granddaughters are in the household – Elizabeth (8) and Mary (7) Smith, both born in Hickling)
    • Census 1861 (Hickling); Edward & Elizabeth Collishaw – age 74, continues to be listed as a butcher
    • Death record for Edward Collishaw (Bingham District) Q2 1863; buried in Hickling 25th April 1863, age 76.
    • There are no other records for an Edward Collishaw of this age in Hickling at this time – however, his occupation as a gardener on William Collishaw’s birth record remains an anomaly (particularly as the two are never clearly listed in the same household in census records).
    • It seems that Edward’s sons Robert and William pursue trades in joinery; whilst Edward’s son John and John’s son (George Henry Collishaw) follow Edward’s trade as a butcher.
  • Census 1841;
    • Household (1)
      • Robert Collishaw; age 25 1816 – joiner (born in county)
        • Robert Collishaw baptised 25th August 1811 – parents Edward and Elizabeth Collishaw (age discrepancy to be checked)
        • Robert Collishaw married Hannah Maltby in Hickling 8th January 1839
      • Hannah Collishaw; wife, age 35 1806 (born in county)
      • William Collishaw; age 15 1826 Ag lab (born in county)
      • Rueben Gibson; age 15 1826 Ag lab (not born in county)
      • The household is listed next to that of Edward Collishaw – age 50, butcher; as Robert is married he is likely to be in his own household with his brother William  residing with him rather than their parents (perhaps in neighbouring properties).
      • Note; William’s birth record describes his father Edward as a gardener and not as a butcher; there is also a discrepancy in Robert’s age – confirmation needed; there is a possibility that these are two separate Collishaw households but there are significant similarities, too.
    • Household (2) – all born in county
      • Edward Collishaw; age 50, 1791, butcher
      • Elizabeth Collishaw; age 50, 1791
      • John Collishaw; age 25, 1816, butcher
        • Baptism – not found (note; coincidence in dates with Robert)
        • Married Ann Faulks 28th July 1841 (Hickling)
        • His son, George Henry Collishaw is also a butcher and in 1885 is living as a neighbour to the north and west of Old Mill Cottage.
      • Elizabeth Collishaw; age 15, 1826, milliner
      • Sarah Collishaw; age 13, 1828
  • Census 1851; William Collishaw; head, age 26, 1825, carpenter (sole household)
    • In 1841 he had been in his brother Robert’s household as an Ag Lab – he is now a joiner like Robert. Later he is recorded in Hickling as a baker and grocer but returns to the joinery trade after leaving the village in the 1870s.
    • (this is assuming that these are a correct interpretation of these family records and that they all relate to the same William, son of the same Edward)
  • William Collishaw married Elizabeth Whittle 18th June 1850 (Hickling)
    • Elizabeth Whittle; likely baptism record in Langar (residence; Langar-cum-Barnstone); 6th July 1823 – parents Thomas (farmer) and Elizabeth Whittle.
    • Known children of William & Elizabeth (Whittle) Collishaw:
      • Frederick Collishaw born 3Q 1851 – mother’s maiden name Whittle; died 1855 and buried in Hickling 6th January 1855.
      • Thomas Edward Collishaw born 1Q 1858 – mother’s maiden name, Whittle (listed in census records for Hickling in 1861 and 1871in 1901 he is a widower and joiner in his brother’s household in Aston, Warks).
      • William Frederick Collishaw born 4Q 1860 – mother’s maiden name Whittle. He is listed in census records for Hickling in 1861 and 1871. In 1891 he is unmarried and living with his parents on Cato Street, Aston, Warwickshire as a carpenter and professional cricketer. He is located here until his death in 1936 (marriage, census & probate records) – see photo W0417 cricket team 1863 (possibly his father)
  • Census 1861 (Hickling);
    • William Collishaw; married, age 36, baker & carpenter – born Hickling
    • Elizabeth Collishaw; wife, age 37 – born Barnston, Notts
    • Thomas Edward Collishaw; son, age 3, scholar – born Hickling
    • William [Fredric] Collishaw; son, age 6 months – born Hickling
  • Census 1871 (Hickling);
    • William Collishaw; head, age 46, 1825, baker & grocer – born Hickling
    • Elizabeth Collishaw; wife, age 48, 1823 – born Barnstone, Notts
    • Thomas Ed Collishaw; son, age 13, 1858, scholar – born Hickling
    • William F Collishaw; son, age 10, 1861, scholar – born Hickling
  • There is no trace of the family in 1881 but they are no longer resident in the property neighbouring old Mill Cottage by 1885. It would seem that the family moved away from Hickling at some time in the 1870s, settling in Aston, Warwickshire by 1891:
    • Census 1891 Cato Street, Aston, Warks):
      • William Collishaw; head, age 66, 1825, carpenter – born Hickling
      • Elizabeth Collishaw; wife, age 67, 1824 – born Barnstone, Notts
      • William F Collishaw; son, age 30, 1861, carpenter and professional cricketer – born Hickling
    • Death record for Elizabeth (Whittle) Collishaw; Q4 1900, Aston, Warwickshire.
    • Census 1901 (99, Ash Rd. Aston, Warks):
      • William F Collishaw; head, married, age 40, 1861, joiner wood trade – born Hickling

      • Miriam Collishaw; daughter, age 2, 1899 – born [Saltley, Birmingham]
      • Thomas E Collishaw; brother, widower, age 43, 1858, joiner wood trade – born Hickling
      • William Collishaw; father, widower, age 76, 1825, retired joiner – born Hickling

William and Betsy (Wharf) Collishaw:

William Collishaw baptised 29th May 1849 – parents John & Sarah (Gill) Collishaw (see, above).

  • He is not directly related to either of the Collishaw households that previously lived neighbouring this property.
    • However, William (Wharf) Collishaw is likely to be the nephew of William and Elizabeth (Waterlane Farm) Collishaw.
    • William (Waterlane Farm) Collishaw and John (father of William (Wharf) Collishaw) were both born in Wysall; this may explain the later link between William & Betsy Collishaw and James Wright Collishaw (son at Waterlane Farm).
  • William and Betsy Collishaw had no children of their own.
  • Census 1851 (Hickling village);

  • For many years William and Betsy Collishaw gave 5cwt of coal to each widow and widower at Christmas. Following William’s retirement, they gave 5 shillings instead.
