William Marriott of Long Clawson 1688 Will and Inventory

In the name of God Amen June the first 1688 I William Marriott of Claxton als Long Clauson in the County of Leicester yeoman being infirm and weak of body but of a good and perfect memory (praised be God for it) doe devise ordain and make this my last Will and Testament in manner and forme following that is to say

First I give and bequeath my soul into the hands of Almighty God my Creator hopeing and verily assuring my self through the Lords mercies and the Alsufficient Merritts of Jesus Christ my Blessed Saviour and Redeemer to be partaker of life everlasting And my body I bequeath to the Earth from whence it was taken to be buried in Christian burial at the discretion of my Executrix and for the worldly Goods which it hath pleased the Lord to lend me I give and bequeath and dispose of them as followeth

Imprimis I give and bequeath unto my eldest son William Marriott and his heires and assignes for ever all that two oxgang of Land lying and being in the East end of Claxton als Long Clauson anciently belonging to my Messuage house wherein I now live together with half my Messuage house and two Closses adjoyning to it, and also the other half of my Messuage and two Closses with three oxgange and a half of land in which my wife is joyntured I give and bequeath unto him at or immediately after her decease or when the said Tenement Closses and Land shall be chargeable to be payd unto her in lieu of her joynture the Sum of eighteen pounds a yeare as now at large doth appear by her joynture reference being thereunto had more at large and particularly doth appear

Item I give unto my son William Marriott my bed and cubbord standing in my parlour on the North side and alsoe the great table in the house and also all the necessaries that I acustamably used in my Kitchin for brewing and bakeing And alsoe I give him a horse or a Mare that he shall make choice of in any of the five last years before he attaines to the age of one and twenty

Item I give and bequeath unto my second son Richard Marriott and his heires for ever that Close of pasture ground with th’apputenances called Goodwines Bankes, and also the severall lands, Leas, seaven sheep Comons & a half, and one Cow pasture with all and Singular other the said premisses with their appurtenances And alsoe two oxgangs of Arable land lying and being in the East and West fields of Claxton als Long Clauson with their appurtenances formerly purchased of John Hurst and Henry Holt And alsoe a Closs called by the name of Great Closs or Shepherds Closs adjoyning to the dwelling house of Widdow Marriott, and alsoe I give him a horse or a mare that he shall make choice of in any year after his said elder brother hath chosen till he attaines to the age of one and twenty

Item I give and bequeath unto my third son John Marriot all that Closs or inclosed peece of ground with all the arable land meadow and pasture and appurtenances unto them belonging and his heires for ever which I purchased of William Hoe and Richard Hoe

Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Marriott the sume of two hundred and fifty poundes to be paid her (provided that she match with her mothers consent) at the age of one and twenty years but if she match at any time without her mothers consent I give her onely one hundred pounds, and during her single hood I allow her the sum of ten pounds yearly for her education and maintenance

Item my Will and mind is that if my eldest son William Marriot die before he attain to the years of one and twenty that then his said above bequeathed land descend unto his next surviving brother by law

Item my Will & mind is that if my son William Marriot die before he attain to the age of one and twenty years and my second son enter upon his estate that then my second son Richards land bequeathed hereby descend unto my third son John Marriott

Item my Will and mind is that if my second son Richard Marriott die before he attain to the age of one and twenty years that then his said bequeathed land herein bequeathed to him descend unto my third son John Marriott and his heires for ever but if he the said John Marriott die before he attain to the age of one and twenty years and my second son Richard Marriott be living then my mind and will is that the land hereby bequeathed to John Marriott ascend and goe unto my second son Richard Marriott and his heires for ever

Item I give unto the poor of Claxton als Long Clauson twenty shillings to be paid to them within one year after my decease

Lastly I doe hereby Constitute make ordaine and appoint my loving wife Cicely Marriott my full and Sole Executrix of this my last Will and Testament She paying my debts and legacies and funerall expences

Thus revoking and making void all former Wills by me heretofore made I do make and appoint this my last Will
