John Hawley of Long Clawson 1778 Will

In the name of God Amen I John Hawley of Claxton otherwise Long Clawson in the County of Leicester Yeoman being of Sound Mind Memory and Understanding (praised be Almighty God for the same ) And Considering the Uncertainty of this life and the Certainty of Death Do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following (that is to say)

In the first place I Resign my Soul into the hands of Almighty God my Creator who gave it me And my Body I Committ to the earth to be decently buried at the Discretion of My Executor hereinafter named And as for such temporal Estate as it hath pleased Almighty God to bless me withall I give devise and bequeath of the same as follows

In the first place I give and devise to my Nephew George Hawley (son of my Brother Richard Hawley) And to his Heirs and Assigns for ever All that my Messuage or Tenement with the homestead and Backside And All other the Appurtenances thereunto belonging situate standing lying and being in Claxton otherwise Long Clawson aforesaid And also that one Oxgang of Land lying and being in the West End fields of Claxton otherwise Long Clawson aforesaid to the aforesaid Messuage or Tenement belonging or commonly therewith used Occupied and Enjoyed now in my own occupation Subject nevertheless to the payment to my Brothers Robert Hawley and Philip Hawley the Sum of ten pounds apiece and to my Sister Mary Rouse the Sum of ten pounds

And to my Nephews John Marriott and Edward Marriott Sons of my late Sister Rosamond Marriot the Sum of ten pounds to be equally divided between them

And to my Nephew John Hawley and Niece Elizabeth Hawley Son and Daughter of my late Brother William Hawley the Sum of ten pounds to be equally divided between them

And unto my Nephew and Nieces Thomas Rouse Mary Rouse and Rosamond Rouse Son and Daughters of my late Sister Elizabeth Rouse the Sum of ten pounds to be equally divided amongst them within twelve months after my Decease

And further my Will and Mind is that if any of my said Brothers and Sisters Nephews and Nieces Robert Hawley Philip Hawley Mary Rouse John Marriott Edward Marriott John Hawley Elizabeth Hawley Thomas Rouse Mary Rouse and Rosamond Rouse shall die before their said Legacies hereby bequeathed become due And payable to them by virtue of this my Will that then the Legacy of him or her so dying shall go and be paid to their Respective Children Share and Share alike

I also give and bequeath to my Niece Mary Blower the Sum of five pounds

And to my Housekeeper Ann Mackley the like Sum of five pounds which said two last mentioned Legacies I Direct shall be paid within twelve months next after my decease

And lastly All my Goods Chattles Cattle and personal Estate of what nature kind or quality soever the same (My Debts Legacies and funeral Expenses being first thereout paid and discharged) I give and Bequeath unto my Nephew George Hawley whom I make and Appoint full and Sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament hereby Revoking All former Wills and Testaments by me at any time heretofore made

In witness whereof I the said John Hawley the testator have to this my last Will and Testament Set my hand and seal this thirty first Day of May in the year of our lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy six
