Thomas Burbage of Scalford 1637 Will and Inventory

Much of the top of this will is missing but one can see that it was made on third February [although it later says that it was signed on the sixth] and begins in the usual format of being sick in body and will then say words to the effect of “but whole of mind”.  The testator’s first bequest is of his soul to God and trusting through Jesus Christ to be saved.  He then commits his body to be buried in the churchyard of Scalford at the discretion of his executrix.

And for my worldly goods [about two words missing] dispose them in manner following (that is to say)

First I will and bequeath unto my Sonne Thomas Burbage the some of Tenn pounds of Lawfull money of England to be paid unto him when he shall come and atteyne unto the age of Nyneteene yeares

Item I will and bequeath unto my Daughter Anne Burbage the Some Tenn pounds of Lawfull money of England to be paid unto her at her age of eighteene yeares

Item my will and minde is that if it happen that eyther the said Thomas Burbate my Sonne or Ann my Daughter shall departe this naturall life before the legacie or portion given unto them as aforesaid be due and payable unto them or eyther of them, then my minde and will is that the survivor of him or her shall have the one halfe of the portion of him or her soe dyinge or departing this naturall life and the other halfe thereof to remaine and be to the only use of Isabell my wife whome I make and ordeyne my onely executrix of this my last will and testament to whome also I give and bequeath all the rest of my goods, Chattles, Cattells and moveables whatsoever

In witness whereof I the said Thomas Burbage have to this my last will and testament sett to my hande and annexed my seale this Sixt day of February in the Twelveth yeare of the raigne of our Soveraigne Lord Charles by the grace of god of England Scotland France and Ireland Kinge defender of the faith &c Annoq Dni 1636
